One of my go-to tools for recovery, is Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM). At the University of Minnesota Duluth, we specifically utilize Graston Technique, but there are many different companies who have custom designed their own tools for comfort and function. These tools are commonly composed of stainless steel, but there are other variations available. I prefer the stainless-steel tools, as the weight of them is helpful to the clinician and can help save our hands and forearms when it comes to having hours of treatment to do in one day. Tool sizes and shapes differ, to help fit specific areas of the body, as well as both convex and concave aspects to increase or decrease surface area. If the tool is decreased in its surface area to the amount of tissue it is in contact with, the more intense the pressure can be.
I utilize these tools to identify abnormalities or dysfunction in the tissue. IASTM can help assist with increased blood flow to help stimulate lymphatic drainage specifically for chronic inflammation, pain control, and increase mobility. IASTM is also commonly used on scars, to help reduce inflammation, redness, and increase tissue plasticity to avoid adhesions.
Tissue mobilization can be utilized passively or while the athlete is in motion and target tissue while under various tension. I find success with mobility and a decrease in pain directly following the treatment, which means I typically do these treatments prior to practice, training or competition.

That custom storage solution at The Villages is a game-changer. Organization + security = a winning combo. In Snake Game, you steer a snake, snag some dots, and watch it stretch, but one wrong move and it’s game over.
